Typically, there are over 3,000 different types of cockroaches most are classed as pests while there are a few that are of benefit to the environment.

The main types of cockroaches found in Australian homes are either the German cockroach, Oriental or American cockroach. Most commonly found are German cockroaches which are described below.

German cockroaches are easily identifiable and have tan or darker shading with two dull strips. Young roaches are practically dark in shading, yet they have similar strips. Adults grow to approximately 12 – 15mm in length.

Life cycle

Females produce an egg capsule containing 30 – 48 eggs at the end of their abdomen. When the eggs are close to hatching, the females attach the capsule in a dark corner where the young nymphs can emerge safely. Nymphs, once hatched, can take between 6 weeks to 6 months to develop into adults.

One female German cockroach can produce up to 20,000 young annually which is why you need to treat your cockroach problem quickly to avoid an infestation.

Where are they found?

The German Cockroach is a difficult pest to get rid of and the most troublesome pest in Brisbane and surrounding areas. They can be found anywhere in the home but the most common areas are in the kitchen, inside cupboards, drawers and dishwashers and other electrical appliances.

How to spot an infestation problem

Cockroaches are nocturnal and will come out to feed at night. If you are seeing cockroaches during the daylight, you have a problem and need to act quickly as you may have an infestation that can quickly get out of control.

1. Cockroach droppings, stains or soil.

Cockroach droppings, stains or soil can be seen anywhere. They are sometimes found in the kitchen or bathroom.

2. Cockroach holes or tracks in walls and floors.

Look in every corner of you home for cockroach tracks. These are usually located in the cracks of walls and around the edges of doors and windows.

3. Cockroach or insect stench.

If you have a cockroach infestation, you will notice that the air smells musty or foul. People often say it smells like urine, but it is actually the smell of roaches that people mistake for urine.

4. Cockroaches running around on the floor or walls.

Cockroaches will run across your floor when there are not many around and they are disturbed. They may also be seen running in a circular motion on your walls or ceiling.

5. Home’s drains and plumbing systems

Cockroaches can be found in your home’s drains and plumbing systems, especially if you have leaky pipes. Cockroaches can also be seen crawling up water pipes that lead to sinks, toilets, dishwashers, bathtubs and showers where they seek warmth from hot water pipes.

They may also crawl up warm air ducts where they seek warmth from vents or air conditioners located near them in your home’s heating system or cooling system respectively.
